Celebrating Independence Day: The Official Americanization Of Sam Showalter aka Prodigal

Citizenship Celebration

I can think of no better way to commemorate Independence Day than recalling the afternoon in 1990, when our four year old son, Sam aka Prodigal, was officially naturalized as a citizen of The United States of America.

Sam came to the US from Guatemala as a three month old when Julie and I adopted him. His favorite memories of the day are waving an American flag  at the naturalization ceremony and celebrating afterward by chowing down with his mother and me on peppered French fries, the specialty of an eatery in Chicago’s Loop.

Sam, his brother Max, the Duchess aka Penny Showalter, and I wish you a happy Fourth of July.
