Yesterday’s post, Betty’s “Betticoat Junction” – The Lascivious Vamp Version Of The Petticoat Junction Theme, reminded me that another theme song from an iconic TV comedy series was – oh, let’s go with adapted by a pop star. Before it was the opening for the Mary Tyler Moore Show, “Love Is All Around” was a hit single for the Troggs. It has also been covered by R.E.M. The version in the soundtrack to the 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral by Wet Wet Wet was an international hit. In the 2003 film Love Actually, “Love Is All Around” was reinvented as a Christmas song “Christmas Is All Around,” performed by actor Bill Nighy as fictional rock star Billy Mack. And, in his sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, it is performed by a church choir.
But no other cover is so transfigured as Joan Jett’s rendition, here performed on The Late Show With David Letterman in 1996.
