As friends and readers may know, I finally adjusted to the fact that being married to Julie meant I was only the second-best writer in the house. Now, I’ve come to accept that being married to the Duchess means I’m only the second-best jock in the house.

I have been and remain, however, the tallest person in the house — so I’ve got that going for me.

The Duchess is also known, since our wedding in 2011, as Penny Showalter, the love of my life.

Julie Showalter was the fiercely intelligent, sexy, and loving woman with whom I had a outrageously wonderful marriage that ended with her death in late 1999 from cancer diagnosed the week of our wedding nearly 20 years earlier.
