Chief Inspector Armand Gamache’s “Four Things That Lead To Wisdom”

Ongoing readers will know that The Duchess & I are enchanted with Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novels. Among the unanticipated benefits of reading these books has been Chief Inspector Gamache’s “four things that lead to wisdom.” The following quotation is from Still Life by Louise Penny, but the same list is found throughout the series:

There are four things that lead to wisdom. You ready for them? She nodded, wondering when the police work would begin. They are four sentences we learn to say, and mean. Gamache held up his hand as a fist and raised a finger with each point.

I don’t know.

I need help.

I’m sorry.

I was wrong.

And, we’re not the only ones impressed. Duke of Derm has integrated these principles into his training of physicians at Duke University. From my perspective of being on both sides of the stethoscope, that is itself a manifestation of wisdom.
