Junior Brown’s Unique Voice, Lyrics, And Guit-Steel Converge In “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead”

While David Allan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” is well known as The Perfect Country & Western Song, I would argue that Junior Brown’s epic “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead” evokes the essence of country music without resorting to a catalog of classic memes. The official video (see below), in which the ex-girlfriend is played by Gwendolyn Gillingham-McIlvaine who measures at 6’7”, won the 1996 CMA Country Music Video of the Year award. The wife in the video is played Brown’s actual wife, Tanya Rae Brown, who also supplies the rhythm guitar for his band.
