Someone’s In The Kitchen With Dinah – But It Ain’t Me
I’m not one of those culinarily talented guys who dazzle folks by producing Boo Paht Pong Karee or venison bourguignon for twelve from leftovers when the caterers don’t show up. I do, however, have my kitchen-related moments. At least once weekly, for example, I receive accolades from The Duchess for having introduced her to the Under Cabinet Jar Opener.
This is one of those things you’ve always wanted — even if you didn’t know it existed. Over the past 30+ years that I’ve employed this utensil, no jar of pickles, salsa, jelly, sauerkraut, or tomato sauce has successfully resisted its application. (A key advantage is that it is permanently mounted, allowing you to use both hands, if necessary, to hold the item you want open.)
Shown atop this post is the most recent iteration of this device, now gracing the kitchen over which The Duchess presides. The first version I used was created from a hunk of scrap wood and a used saw blade by Julie’s dad.1
You can now purchase the plastic format of this item from Amazon, eBay, various brick and mortar stores… for prices ranging from $5 to $35.
- Julie Showalter was the fiercely intelligent, sexy, and loving woman with whom I had a outrageously wonderful marriage that ended with her death in late 1999 from cancer diagnosed the week of our wedding nearly 20 years earlier. She was also a brilliant scholar, the mother of our two sons, and a prize-winning author. Many posts on this blog are about her and still others consist of her writings. Julie’s Story is the account of our unlikely romance, Information can be found at Julie Showalter FAQ. [↩]
