Leonard Cohen Album Logos: “The hummingbird…came here to rescue the heart from the handcuffs”

Leonard Cohen Album Logos: The Hummingbird Returns

This is the first of a series of posts dedicated to Leonard Cohen Album Logos. Of all these symbols, the hummingbird holds a special place in that it first appeared on the 1979 Recent Songs album cover art drawn by Dianne V. Lawrence and then reappeared as part of the hummingbird, heart, & handcuffs logo of the 1992 The Future album (cover design attributed to Michael Petit). This reiteration is addressed by Cohen in the following excerpt from The Future by Alberto Manzano (El Europeo: Spring 1993):

And the hummingbird wasn’t restricted to the front cover of Recent Songs

Note: Much more about the hummingbird and the hummingbird, heart, & handcuffs as well as other Leonard Cohen album logos in future posts.

Credit Due Department: Special thanks to Dominique BOILE (France), Peter Torbijn (Netherlands), and Maarten Massa (Belgium) – the international panel of LeonardCohenology pros who initially pointed out to me that the image of the Cohen-affiliated hummingbird first appeared on the 1979 Recent Songs album cover art drawn by Dianne V. Lawrence.

I am republishing selected posts from my former Leonard Cohen site, Cohencentric, here on AllanShowalter.com (these posts can be found at Leonard Cohen). This entry was originally posted Apr 25, 2015.

  1. I did wonder what the hummingbird meant for Leonard Cohen, I was left 60 hummingbirds by my grandad and I have always had a connection and affinity with them. I’m just doing a mosaic of one on a table I was given.
