Leonard Cohen Was More Than “A Thousand Kisses Deep” In Dublin – 2009

Leonard Cohen Adds Verse To “A Thousand Kisses Deep”

Leonard Cohen’s Dublin recitation of “A Thousand Kisses Deep” features an additional verse not included at previous concerts.1 Leonard has, of course, exercised his authorial prerogative to adapt his performances of “A Thousand Kisses Deep” (as well as his other songs) in the past.

Surveying YouTube videos of “A Thousand Kisses Deep” from the 2008 Tour, Florian at LeonardCohenForum found occasional changes in lines. For example, the line “A snowflake must have died for you” was replaced at one show with “If I could move I’ll kneel for you,” and the phrase, “was looking at the crucifix” was once changed into “the autumn moved across your skin.”

A LeonardCohenForum report on the 2009 Dublin Concerts by mydoglorca notes

We thought on Sunday there was one extra verse to A Thousand Kisses & on Monday night it seemed to be two extra but might be wrong there.

The official version of the poem can be found in the Book Of Longing.2

Most importantly, however, the July 21, Dublin performance of “A Thousand Kisses Deep” is resonant and moving, evoking an enthusiastic response from the audience.

MindSpin July 24, 2009 at 8:02 am: This poem is a wine glass raised at sunset to all that is and was – or might have been. Sunset, vine, and fruit quaffed, still burning, at the precipice of goodbye. Thanks to the poet for singing what leaves us mute.

Gerry July 24, 2009 at 10:34 am: Possibly one of the most moving things I’ve ever heard. The highlight of a night of highlights. Cohen blessed us with his presence at the O2, Dublin on Sunday, July 20, 2009; a night that will live in my memory for a long

MindSpin July 24, 2009 at 2:00 pm: I should have just said “Wow.”

Mary July 24, 2009 at 8:41 pm: MindSpin – your comment was amazing. Leave “wow” for folk like me (laughing).
