“It’s not just a candid of Cohen shopping for Cheetos at a local 7/11. It’s a small book of psalms.” Liel Leibovitz On Leonard Cohen’s Pictorial Manual For Living With Defeat

Leonard Cohen sent me this photo, which was first published on Cohencentric: Leonard Cohen Sighting: “Midnight Run For Cheetos At The Local 7/11” – May 23, 2015. A few months later, I posted it on Leonard’s Facebook page, where it was seen by Liel Leibovitz, author Of A Broken Hallelujah.1 The photo became the basis for a succinct but extraordinary essay: Happy Birthday, Leonard Cohen! (Tablet: Sept 21, 2015). An excerpt follows:

Take a look at this picture… It’s not just a candid of Cohen shopping for Cheetos at a local 7/11. It’s a small book of psalms. It is, to paraphrase one of the poet’s most transcendent lines, a manual for living with defeat.
