In this video I do a deep dive into Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah”, highlighting specific songwriting techniques Cohen uses in this masterfully composed lyric. I believe this lyric can offer amazing guidance for songwriters.

What “Hallelujah” Can Teach Us About Songwriting (Part 1)
Dear Allan Showalter, I like this very much. I am giving a talk to a group interested in colour at UCL. I introduce it in the context of the ‘stuff’ of art.
and would like to use a clip from your video. It’s exactly 09:00 – 10:00, where you mention ‘The Fourth’ = F major, ‘The Fifth’ = G major, and then move on to talk about the ‘Minor falls’ = A minor, and the ‘Major lifts’ = F major. That seems a good analogy with the way in which colour theory imposes a ‘geometry’ on our experience of colour. Could you let me have that clip?
In return, I’ll send you my essay, ‘Duende: Leonard and Lorca,’ in Leonard Cohen and Philosophy: Various Positions, (ed.) Jason Holt.
I very much like your analysis. – Edward
