As long-time readers know, HeckOfAGuy.com begat 1HeckOfAGuy, which begat Cohencentric.com and DrHGuy.com, which begat AllanShowalter.com – the latest & current phoenix in this sequence.
The first HeckOfAGuy.com post, Opening Statement, which was precisely as provocative and stimulating a read as one would anticipate from the title, went online 15 years ago – March 3, 2006. The site closed in mid-February 2015.
Like its author, HeckOfAGuy,com in its younger days was slimmer in appearance (the original format is shown above) and even less proper in tone; note the original subtitle scrawled across the top of the page in the illustration above:
If this has made just 1 person spew Pinot Noir through his or her nose, then it’s all been worth it.
And the content was different as well. The early posts (for example, the second entry, A Heck Of A [Warm-Up] Guy) focused on my life and immediate interests.
Today’s post is an acknowledgement of the thousands of entries about Leonard Cohen, Anjani, other artists, my life with and the writings of my deceased wife Julie Showalter, my new life with The Duchess aka Penny Showalter, my mom’s incredible collectibles, Neil Ellis photos, and esoterica, including a consideration of broomcorn, a list of risky BDSM safewords, and Quid Pro Quotation Marks. many of which are now republished at AllanShowalter.com.
For those keeping score, the first mention of Leonard Cohen at the 1HeckOfAGuy URL was the July 6, 2006 entry, “Do I Have To Dance All Night” – The Best Leonard Cohen Song You’ve (Probably) Never Heard, and posts about him, Anjani, Lorca, Adam, and the rest of the gang were for some time only occasional occurrences.
The Outcome
On considering this record, DrHGuy will be spending the rest of the day trying to recall what the heck he was thinking 16 years ago.
Happy Anniversary, Allan!
Thank you so much for all you’ve done over the years – for Leonard and us mortals.
I remember that song made a big impression on you and me 😉
I swear time goes by faster as we age, and gravity is a curse!
